Willow-weaving Workshops, University of Leicester Botanic Garden, July 2016

Catherine ran two willow-weaving workshops for the University of Leicester Botanic Garden on Tuesday 12th July and Saturday 16th July 2016.. The Tuesday workshop was held at the Attenborough Arboretum classroom, whereas the Saturday workshop was held at the Coach House on the main garden site.

The students all made a frame basket and a garden wigwam to take home at the end of the day.

Leicester Botanic Garden Plant Sale and Open Day 2016

I count it as a good and busy "make and take" day if I come home with a really sore throat from all the people I have chatted and interacted with. The annual Leicester Botanic Garden Plant Sale and Open Day on Sunday 3rd July 2016, was therefore a good day, with loads of families making willow star wands, willow hearts or willow fish.

Catherine also had a stall selling baskets and small garden sculptures, such as willow damselflies and flowers.

Canvey Island Wildlife Day 2016

Clive joined Catherine to return to the annual Canvey Island Wildlife Day held at West Canvey Marsh on Saturday 28th May 2016.

They were demonstrating the treadle lathe and shave horse, chatting to visitors and giving out pretty flowers made of hazel wood.

Poisonous Plants Talk, Sawston, May 2016

Catherine gave a talk on Tuesday 24th May 2016, about "poisonous plants" to a youth group that meets at the Free Church in Sawston.

With the help of a friend from the next village, she had plenty of proper deadly specimens to show and talk about. Hemlock - a pretty purple and green spotty stemmed umbellifer - is very common in the Sawston area, whereas the deadly nightshade and henbane came from nearby Whittlesford.

Basket-making Workshops at University Of Leicester Botanic Garden, May 2016

This year, Catherine will be running several basket making workshops at the University Of Leicester Botanic Garden.

On Tuesday May 17th 2016 or Saturday May 21st 2016 you will take home a willow plant support / sweet pea wigwam and a simple frame basket that you have made.

Whereas, on Tuesday October 4th 2016 or Saturday October 8th 2016 you will make your own small fruit or bread basket, using the "stake and strand" method.

Each workshop runs from 10:00am to 4:00pm and costs £45 per person. All materials and tools are provided and you will take home your work at the end of the day.

Garden Wigwam Workshop, Warner Textile Archive, March 2016

On Friday 4th March 2016, Catherine led a garden wigwam workshop at the Warner Textile Archive, Silks Way, Braintree CM7 3GB.

Participants each made two wigwams in this day long course, although some of the students were a bit tired from having to stand up for so long. Wigwams can't really be made sitting down like a basket. Whoops - this was something I had not thought of before!.

Our stall at the Countesthorpe Craft Market.

We hope to see you again at The Craft Market at Countesthorpe College on Saturday 7th November 2015 from 10:00am until 4:00pm.

Active Arts are celebrating their 38th annual Craft Market with over 70 stalls. We will be selling a wide range of willow and wooden items, suitable for giving as gifts or using as decorations.

Countesthorpe College is on Winchester Road, Countesthorpe LE8 5TB. Admission is £1.50 and there will be coffee, lunch and tea available.

Earth Trust Heritage Skills Workshop, October 2015

Catherine ran a basket-making workshop for the Earth Trust on Tuesday 6th October 2015. This Heritage Skills workshop was part of the Stepping into our Natural Heritage project.

Eight participants (and the Earth Trust Project Officer joined in too) made a small stake and strand basket during this day long workshop.

Catherine will be running three workshop sessions at the Earth Trust Heritage Skills Taster Session on Saturday 1st August 2015 starting at 9:30am, 12:00pm and 2:30pm.

The day is part of the Stepping into our Natural Heritage project, run by the Earth Trust, and takes place at the Earth Trust Centre, Little Wittenham, Abingdon, Oxfordshire. OX14 4QZ.

The sessions will introduce participants to working with willow and help you make a frame basket, similar to the one shown above. The sessions are free, but are already fully booked, although a reserve list is maintained.

Leicester University Botanic Garden Plant Sale & Family Day 2015

The sessions will introduce you to working with willow and help you make some simple items together. We will also have a small stall selling our baskets and garden-related items.

Art House 2015

Our stall at Art House 2015.

We are delighted to return to Leicester's annual Art House exhibition which will be held on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th June 2015, from 11:00am to 6:00pm and on Monday 15th June 2014, from 2:00pm to 8:00pm. Art House exhibits "extraordinary art in ordinary houses", in and around the Clarendon Park, Stoneygate, and Knighton areas of the city.

The venues can be easily accessed by a two-mile walk, or guided cycle ride. Hopper buses are also available on Saturday and Sunday for a voluntary donation to Bone Cancer & LRI Teenage Cancer Unit in memory of Ella Ashberry-Sharp and of Liane Ashberry.

Our work will be on show and for sale in the garden of 71 Holmfield Road, LE2 1SF on the Saturday and Sunday. This venue also hosts the extremely popular "Tart House", which sells delicious home-made cakes and refreshments, with the proceeds donated to the same charities. On the Monday, we will be in the front garden of 75 Holmfield Road.

Canvey Island Wildlife Day

Catherine and Clive were demonstrating use of the pole lathe and the shave horse on Saturday 30th May 2015, from 11:00am to 4:00pm at the Canvey Island Wildlife Day, West Canvey Marsh, Canvey Road, Canvey Island SS8 0QD.

They were making Gypsy Flowers from coppiced Hazel, and giving them away to visitors.

Warner Textile Archive Willow Weaving Workshop

The Craft Market at Countesthorpe College 2014

We are lucky to have the opportunity of a stall at The Craft Market at Countesthorpe College on Saturday 8th November 2014 from 10:00am until 4:00pm.

This annual pre-Xmas event, run by Active Arts, is now in its 37th year and will feature over 70 stalls. We will be selling a range of smaller willow and wooden items, suitable for giving as gifts or using as decorations.

Countesthorpe College is on Winchester Road, Countesthorpe LE8 5TB. Admission is £1.50 and there will be coffee, lunch and tea available.

Earth Trust Water Day 2014

Catherine will be running drop-in activities at the Earth Trust Water Day, from 11:00am on Sunday 5th October 2014 at Little Wittingham, near Abingdon, Oxfordshire.

Given the theme of the day, Catherine will be showing people how to weave their own willow fishes in the Fison Barn.

Aylestone Meadows Appreciation Society Fruits Of Nature Day 2014

Jeff will be running a small stall at the Aylestone Meadows Appreciation Society Fruits Of Nature Day on Saturday 20th September 2014 from 12:30pm until 4:30pm.

The Fruits Of Nature Day is a celebration of nature's harvest, and features crafts using natural materials. The event takes place near the Canal Street Car Park at Aylestone Meadows, Leicester.

Our good friend Kim will be willow-weaving, others will be pole-lathing, spinning, charcol-making, foraging, apple-juicing, story-telling and working a forestry heavy horse team. There will be a quiz, a treasure hunt, folk music, games, numerous stalls, food and refreshments.

Leicester University Attenborough Arboretum Woodland Day For Families 2014

Catherine and Jeff will be demonstrating green woodworking techniques and equipment at the Leicester University Attenborough Arboretum Woodland Day For Families on Sunday 14th September 2014 from 11:00am until 4:00pm.

The Attenborough Arboretum is a separate site from the Botanic Garden, on Carisbrooke Road in the old village of Knighton, and occupies part of the land formerly belonging to Home Farm.

We will be making small items on the shave horse and pole-lathe.

Art House 2014

Leicester's annual Art House exhibition opens its doors on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th June 2014, from 11:00am to 6:00pm and on Monday 9th June 2014, from 3:00pm to 9:00pm. This will be our first visit to this very popular event.

Art House is held in twelve homes and gardens in and around the Clarendon Park, Stoneygate, and Knighton areas of Leicester. The venues can be easily accessed by a two-mile walk, or guided cycle ride. Hopper buses are also available on Saturday and Sunday for a voluntary donation to local charities in memory of Ella Ashberry-Sharp.

Location information, map, cycle routes, bus timetable and full details are available at Art House. Our work will be on show in the garden of number 54 Houlditch Road, LE2 3FE and available for sale. We look forward to meeting you there and talking about our work.

Mars will be holding their annual Staff Christmas Craft Market at their Waltham On The Wolds National Office on Thursday 21st November 2013, from 11:00am to 2:00pm.

This private event is for Mars staff only, and we look forward to seeing a few old friends there, and meeting some new ones.

Oakley Grange Farm Christmas Craft Market 2013

Our stall in The Barn at Oakley Grange Organic Farm, Hathern, Leicestershire.

Oakley Grange Organic Farm will hold their annual Christmas Craft Market on Saturday 9th November 2013. We will demonstrate weaving small willow items at our stall in the barn, which is open from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

This organic farm runs a café and delicatessen, and is doing well in the RSPB Nature of Farming Award 2013, winning the Midlands region and reaching the final. Oakley Grange Farm is at Hathern, a few miles north east of Loughborough. A map and further details are available on their web-site.

Market Harborough Handmade Art and Crafts Summer Sale 2013

On Saturday 3rd August 2013, we will be selling our willow baskets and other items at the Handmade Art and Crafts Summer Sale.

The sale is open from 10:00am to 4:00pm, and takes place at the Congregational Church Hall, Bowden Lane, near the centre of Market Harborough. This annual event is held to raise money for charity; this year's cause is wishes4kids.

Leicester BioBlitz 2013

Leicester BioBlitz is an annual event to try to record as many living species as possible within 24 hours. This year's event will survey Ayelstone Meadows.

We will be there on Saturday 18th May 2013, with some willow, ready to show you how to make small items such as stars, fish and rushes.
